the Original Attitude Box

Raising your child can be the fun

The Attitude Box is a resource that allows a parent to direct a child towards good behavior without having to always rely on a parent's ability to have a positive mindset every time. The Attitude Box is a consistent tool when a parent is tired, stressed or just in need of a helper. Direct the child to go to the friendly Attitude Box and there the child is able to confront his own actions. He brings the correct card to the parent who agrees with the child that it was the right card. Now turn the card over, have the child recite the self-esteem statement (I am ... statement) and reward the child for correct thinking with a sticker. The sticker goes on the achievement chart. It's that easy. Behavior is a reflection of what a person thinks. Good thinking - good behavior. A parent is able to interact in a positive way with the child and the child walks away with a healthy self-esteem that is reflected in his future behavior.

Build Self-Esteem in Children

As parents and educators we want train children with a full measure of self-esteem. Children's inner picture of themselves are reflected by their feelings, their thoughts and their overall daily behavior. Self-esteem is critical for a person to be emotionally stable, to have the ability to have friendships, and to be happy and content in life. Under stress, parents often use negative attributes to describe their children or their children's behavior or punish the child with degrading consequences. The child loses self-esteem which causes the child to see themselves negatively. They become as they see themselves. As parents, we need an aid that reduces our stress and gives us a tool that is constant when training our children. The Attitude Box is that constant, that helping aid, that does not challenge children's self-worth, but combats negative behavior. It does that by allowing children to bring themselves into accountability. No longer are the parent or the educator forced to bring children under control. The child brings him or herself under control and then is rewarded for the positive attitude that results. Rewarding correct thinking brings about more correct thinking. If you want help in building self-esteem, then a daily hands-on tool is what you need. The Attitude Box is the only tool available today that builds self-esteem while combating negative behavior. It is not something that tells you how to do the work. The Attitude Box does the work for you.

How To Use The Attitude Box

Upon receiving the box:
A. Go through the box with the child and explain each attitude and reward with a sticker. Allow the child to color the coloring book. B. Place The Attitude Box and achievement charts in a pleasant atmosphere for daily use.

Directions for daily use:
1. When negative attitudes or behavior arises, ask the child to go to The Attitude Box and find the card describing that attitude. Example: disobedient, unkind, impatient, impolite, boastful, tattling, untruthful, anger, selfish, careless, disrespectful, grumbling, perfection, fear, low self-esteem. This builds accountability as the child identifies their own actions. A younger child will need your assistance. The Attitude Characters aid in recognition.

2. Have the child read the reverse side of the card describing the correct behavior. Example: obedient, kind, patient, polite, humble, cooperative, honesty, compassion, sharing, responsible, respectful, thankful, acceptance, courage, self worth. This reminds them of the correct behavior.

3. The child should say the positive self-esteem " I" statement (it's in red). Example: " I am obedient, I am kind, I am patient, I am polite, I am humble, I am cooperative, I am truthful, I am compassionate, I am thoughtful, I am responsible, I am respectful, I am thankful, I am courageous, I am OK."

4. Reward the child immediately with a corresponding sticker for their achievement chart (do not wait for changed behavior). This builds self-esteem by rewarding correct thinking.

Now look for positive attitudes at all times and continue to encourage and reinforce with stickers and verbal praise. Be consistent and the Attitude Box will do the work for you.

Classroom Application

When a child acts out with negative behavior, a teacher is required to stop the teaching and give attention to the disruption. The child who seeks attention wins the moment but the class suffers. With the Attitude Box, the teacher simply tells the student to go to the Attitude Box and immediately regains control of the classroom. Best of all, the problem that the student had is explainable through the non-threatening cards. The teacher can now truly help the student, but not at the expense of the other children.
When one of your children acts out, it is time for intervention. There are three types of intervention. First, there is denial, ignore the problem or deny that the negative behavior has occurred. This, of course, does not work and will only make things worse. Second, the parent directly intercedes and brings the situation under control by calling the child into accountability. This usually results in the child being told they are bad, (reducing self esteem) or the child is given consequences, deprivation, time out, or worse (further reducing self-esteem). It is only a temporary fix, as a child with low self-esteem will only act out more often. Third, you can allow the children to bring themselves into accountability. Now you are doing the right thing. Best of all, you're not punishing the children for negative behavior, you are rewarding the children for proper responses and reinforcing their choice of correct behavior and that builds relationships. The training of the correct behavior is reinforced. Self-esteem is enhanced by the child affirming themselves as a person who chooses correct behavior. No crying, no yelling, and no more stress; just one more sticker on the achievement chart.
