Authority = The sense of authority you have over your child. The ability you have to establish and enforce rules. The ability to gain the respect of your child and to influence or control what he or she does.

Affiliation = The sense of connectedness you have with your child. The ability to connect emotionally and to communicate well with your child.

With regards to your child…

1. Do you have high authority or low authority? (top boxes/bottom boxes)

2. Do you have high affiliation or low affiliation? (right boxes/left boxes)

Use the questions you just answered to determine which box in the chart contains your child’s possible perception of you. for instance, if you have high authority and low affiliation, then your child might perceive you to be like a drill sergeant or cop.
