Free Bedtime Behavior Chart

for Young Children

Bedtime can easily become one of the most challenging parts of the day for families with young children. Stalling, repeated requests, getting out of bed, and power struggles can make evenings stressful for both parents and kids. Our Free Bedtime Behavior Chart is designed to bring structure, predictability, and calm to your nighttime routine.

This chart uses a simple “3 Strikes” system that helps children clearly understand bedtime expectations while giving parents a fair and consistent way to respond to behavior.

During the bedtime routine, your child can earn up to three strikes. Strikes may occur for behaviors such as repeatedly getting out of bed, refusing to follow directions, arguing about bedtime, or delaying the routine.

Here’s how the bedtime chart works:

  • 0 Strikes: Your child earns a special privilege the next day (choosing breakfast, picking the bedtime story, extra playtime, etc.).

  • 1–2 Strikes: These are considered minor mistakes, and there are no rewards or consequences—just the normal bedtime routine.

  • 3 Strikes: Your child earns a clear and predictable consequence, such as losing a privilege the following day.

This approach helps remove the emotion and frustration from bedtime struggles. Instead of negotiating or reacting in the moment, parents simply follow the system. Children quickly learn that their choices during bedtime directly impact the outcome.

Download the free chart, place it somewhere visible, and involve your child in tracking their progress each night.

How Can a Bedtime Chart Benefit Your Family?

A bedtime chart does more than track behavior—it helps create a healthy structure that children thrive on. When expectations are clear and consistent, bedtime becomes easier and less stressful for everyone.

Some of the benefits include:

Clear expectations for children

Children know exactly what behaviors are expected during the bedtime routine. When rules are clear, there is less confusion and fewer arguments.

Consistency for parents

Parents often struggle with deciding how to respond when bedtime behavior becomes challenging. A chart provides a consistent system that removes guesswork and helps parents stay calm and confident.

Motivation for positive behavior

Children are naturally motivated by rewards and recognition. The opportunity to earn a privilege for having zero strikes encourages cooperation and positive choices.

Reduced bedtime power struggles

Because the rules and outcomes are already established, there is less negotiating and fewer emotional reactions from parents and children.

A sense of responsibility for kids

Tracking strikes and rewards helps children begin to understand that their choices have natural consequences, an important life skill.

Additional Tips for Handling Bedtime Challenges

Even with a chart, a few simple strategies can make bedtime run more smoothly.

Create a consistent bedtime routine

Children do best when bedtime happens in the same order every night. For example: bath → pajamas → brushing teeth → story → lights out.

Give a clear bedtime warning

Let children know bedtime is approaching by giving a 5–10 minute warning before starting the routine. This helps them mentally prepare for the transition.

Keep bedtime calm and predictable

Avoid stimulating activities right before bed. Quiet activities like reading or talking about the day help children wind down.

Avoid long negotiations

If your child begins to argue or stall, calmly refer back to the bedtime system. Keeping your response simple and consistent prevents power struggles.

Stay calm and follow through

The most important part of any behavior system is consistency. Children learn quickly when parents calmly follow the same rules each night.
